Bed Bug Inspection & Detection

Often times live bed bugs are easily visible in their adult form. They are approximately the size of a pencil eraser, red to brown in color, and resemble a flat oval in shape.

Necessary Tools for a Thorough Bed Bug Inspection

Unfortunately, many people fail to realize how much effort it actually takes to conduct a proper inspection for bed bugs. A comprehensive inspection requires tools to dissemble beds, removing baseboards, outlet covers, lighting fixtures, smoke detectors and many other nooks and crannies that they can crawl into.

Here is a list of items you will need to conduct a full bed bug inspection:

    • Flashlight
    • Step ladder
    • Pliers & Crescent Wrench
    • Rubber Gloves
    • Screw Drivers
    • Magnifying Lense
    • Small Pry bar
    • Plastic Bags

Fecal Matter & Blood Spots

Fecal spotting tends to appear not as red blood but instead as dark, black stains or smears from the digested blood that has been excreted. Remember, the bed bugs are feeding on you! If you have any reason to suspect bed bugs, don’t hesitate and give us a call today! Quite often, the bed bug is unable to digest all of its meal and then excretes a portion of the undigested blood on the areas where it crawls. Additionally, when the bugs are feeding it is common for the individual to move around in the bed and squeeze the bed bug, causing the blood to be forced out of the bug as it is squished.

Heidi – The Bed Bug Sniffing Dog

Heidi is a three year old, English Beagle similar in appearance to the Foxhound but slightly smaller. Heidi has a unique ability that allows her to sniff out the eggs and live adult bed bugs in the same way they can detect drugs or bombs. This ability is referred to as Canine Scent Detection (CSD), which gives their trainers a simple sign to confirm a discovery. Heidi’s nose is so good that she can sniff out one single bed bug. That’s right, just one! Her nose is 10,000 times more sensitive than humans and she is able to inspect a room in a matter of minutes, and in most cases be over 90% accurate!
